Introduction to the Physics of Moore-Read State

Abstract:

We will review the physics of the Moore-Read state - the best candidate for the explanation of the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor 5/2.

The Moore-Read state is a fractional quantum Hall state with underlying particles - neutral spinless fermions paired into pairs of angular momentum one (p - wave pairing). This unusual structure with the BCS pairing function given in the form of Pfaffian leads to the non-Abelian statistics of excitations, i.e., non-Abelian quasiparticles. This will be demonstrated on the example of four quasiparticles. We will show that if the positions of four quasiparticles are fixed, their description is given by a two-dimensional space. Thus, four quasiparticle configurations may serve as a qubit in a topological quantum computer.
